What was truck line/lines name in the Mid 60's?

    Hello:

Just curious; who was the Corvette hauler out of the old St.Louis Plant in the
Mid-60's. I was once told it was "St.Louis Motor Freight Lines" at a Bloomington
Gold Workshop. I do not know if that was correct. Would like to know if they are
still around or where bought out? If so by who? Has anybody ever tried to get the old copies of the "Car Shipper" forms with all the info of the Corvettes
    delivered?

    Thanks; Larry Evoskis

    Larry,

If I post the name of the company here, they will soon have an overheated switchboard from all the phone calls from people looking for their "car shipper". However, I can tell you, with certainty, there are no records. I went through all of this in the late 70's and again in the 80's.

The "Car Shipper" document generated by the plant was a carbon sub-set of the window sticker, and didn't have the name of the haulaway carrier on it. The contract carrier may have generated their own internal Bill of Lading with their name on it, but it didn't appear on the standard pack of final St. Louis documents, and the Car Shipper copy the dealer got with the car didn't have the carrier's name on it either. As Michael noted, the records "ain't out there".

        "Car Shipper" Copy

The "car shipper" would have looked similar to the dealer invoice.

Would this also be true for the rail car shipments that started about 1959?

Yes, it would be the exact same. In fact, the silver coupe "car shipper" above indicates shipped by rail. There's a line of info boxes on the very top of the shipper that I deleted. The heading in one of the boxes in that line is titled "car or or route. (carrier or route) "Rail" is typed in.

              Re: "Car Shipper" Copy

Here's a '66 Car Shipper - the one that went with the car, and was matched up later by the dealer with the Wholesale Invoice shown above, which was mailed. The "For:" area at the bottom shows the source of the dealer's wholesale floorplan financing (GMAC in this case). Occasionally we'd get one with "Cash" in this area, which meant the dealer was "out of bed" with GMAC; we held these units in the "Cash" row in the yard until we were notified by GMAC that the dealer had paid cash for the car and it was OK to ship it

Nice piece John. And for all those still trying to find their paperwork, there's a hint for your next search direction on John's paper.

                  Car Shipper Copy available

The car shippers copy became avaiable late year from GM but the records only go back to 1977 model year. I contacted GM with my vin #'s and they made me copies off of the microflim records all 4 requests arrived in one large envelope along with a survey form and a self addresed stamped envelope for return back.
The bad news it is only for 1977 to present and GM was handling up to 350 request a month so they turn the department over to another tier group inside GM and the started charging $50.00 per copy.
