    Thanks for your input Ed re: '58 brake light problems. The t/s switch was replaced first...and yes, the signal lights both work fine when the brake lights fail. There is voltage on both sides of b/l switch. I'm going to take the advice of Mike McCagh re: grounding problem. Hope it works.....July 4th weekend or not, I'm working on the '58 thanks, Terry Payton

    If the turn signals work and the brake lights don't, then it is NOT a ground, as they have common circuitry. The common thread is the t/s switch.

      If the cancelling mechanism doesn't properly re-center the pin in the slider of the turn signal switch after a turn, you will either have brake lights only on one side, or none at all. It's in the cancelling mechanism or in the switch itself - have fixed many of these.

        There, the master has spoken. I know it's a new switch, but still entirely possible for it to be faulty or not returning to center.
