Long article in AutoWeek back in its newspaper format around '81. The Banshee was killed because of Corvette. GM didn't allow Pontiac to compete against Corvette, but did permit the Firebird instead a year later.
The Banshee would have killed the Corvette, much smaller, much lighter, thus better performance.
The '68 Corvette would have been much different with that kind of competition.- Top

Re: Can you identify this Corvette? Different View
My Chevrolet Pilot Line group supported Chevy Show & Display activities back in the 60's, and the Pontiac Banshee was supposed to be shown for the first time to the press the day before the Chicago Show opened back in '66 or '67. At the last minute, the day before Press Day, some staffer mentioned to Fredric Donner (GM Chairman) that one definition for the word Banshee was "Black Screaming Death"; Donner had just gotten done apologizing publicly to Ralph Nader for siccing a private detective on him during the Corvair hearings, didn't need any more "safety" grief, and ordered the Banshee removed from the show that night. The display was repainted in the middle of the night and when Press Day opened the next day, the display had some ordinary Pontiac on the turntable instead. The Banshee went back to Styling, and was never shown publicly, although there are numerous photos of it. It WAS a stunning car.- Top
