    C2 L79 3810 Holley carb problems

OK, here goes the story. I took my car to the base today here in the United Kingdom to celebrate the holiday. On the way back it ran terrible and at idle would die. I finally limped it off the road, the car died, would not restart....I'm sure we've all been there. Anyway when I took the a/c lid off the back of the carb was almost over flowing with gas. A light bulb went off in my brain that maybe I have a problem... so I went home and retrieved my perfect dated, colored etc. rebuilt 3810 dated 721 that I shelled out big bucks for in 2003. A swap was made. I got the car to idle nice at 800 r.p.m. "sweet" I thought I'm back in the saddle again. Now for the test drive. As I pulled out into traffic and gently played with the gas peddle the car bucks, pops through the carb and basically can't get out of it's own way. I managed to limp it home and put it in the garage. I need help. The engine is a total rebuild with less than 300 miles. The base gas is advertised as 95 octane unleaded. The distributor is totally rebuilt and has a new vacuum can on it. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Is the carb doing the same - overflowing with gas - if so, you may have some dirt in the fuel system that's causing the float needle and seat to leak and overfill the fuel bowl. If it was a BIG backfire, you may have ruptured the power valve - will run really rich.
    Good luck,

      My first guess is

That you gas fouled the plugs. Usually they work burn off and clean themselves when this happpens. Take a look at them.

        Re: My first guess is

I would assume that you have a good fuel filter - in line. The 65's did not have an internal filter in the carb. If you don't have a fuel filter on this guy buy the lines, and filter and make sure it works.
The other problem is the hose from the filter to the banjo fitting on the carb. New fuels and ethenol deteriate these hose pretty quickly. Check this first.
The real problem now is to determine what failed.
You will have to remove the primary and secondary float bowls, use a clean pan to catch the fuel and see what kind of residue is in the pan and in the float bowls.
Another problem I have had was excessive fuel pressure which would force open the needle and flood the secondary - once in a while. The fuel would shoot out the vent tube, hit the air filter cover and get sucked into the engine putting out the fire. The side exhaust would load up with fuel and when the engine fired - you got a blue flame about 5 ft long out each side of the car at 60 mph it was pretty spectacular.
Another problem I ran into was the electrical harness dress on the fire wall had sagged a bit and the gas pedel linkage would come back and hit the connector in the harness on the fire wall - pulling the connectors apart. The engine would start but when you let off the key it would immediately die. It started because the ingnition resistor was shorted out by the contacts in the starter. It would start but not continue to run.
Easy compared to the new cars. The computer dies and its many $ to get a new one.

          Jimmy,

Seems I've got a similar problem, with a newly restored 3810. Let me know if you get yours resolved. I'll do the same.

This is a follow up. Today the base announced that our filling station that just opened with "brand new" underground tanks & "brand new" pumps has a problem. It appears to be WATER in the gas!!! Now I get to drain my tank I filled at the base and my brand new show "HOLLEY" carb and refill with British gas and see if that cures the problem. Will keep you posted.
