1966 Coupe

I was reaching up behind the dash of my '66 Coupe to change a dash lite. I caused a short in the ammeter connector wire and it burned from the back of the guage all the way to under the hood. The wire is on the outside of the harness and I can see the burned covering of the wire all the way out. Everything is working on my dash except the ammeter guage. There does not seem to be a fuse for this instrament or it surely would have blown and kept the wire from getting so hot.
Can I replace the burnt wire itself and leave the rest of the wiring that seems to be unhurt alone? Would this be safe?

Dave -

Your ammeter has two wires - the black one goes to the large battery cable stud on the starter solenoid, and the black/white one goes to the screw terminal buss on the horn relay; both wires go through the fuse block and through the inboard multiple connector on the engine side of the fuse block. No other circuits are involved. Unless the burned wire melted through the insulation of adjacent wires in the harness bundle, you should be able to replace the burned circuit wire.
