Re: here is my 2 cents worth

I guess everyone has their false gods. Yours seem to be "Mike H." Whoever he is. I would hope that he's smart enough not to endorse driving around with 40 year old brakes on your car.

Re: That is a heck of a Trojan you have there

Thanks Mike. I already have the latest Microsoft antispyware program installed but it doesn't help. I'll wait a few days, use the old puter, and see if MS comes up with anything new. I've learned that it's a brand new trojan. Started on 26 June.

------Gee, Jim, who said anything about 40 year old brakes. I was talking exclusively about silicone brake fluid. Read the posts a bit more carefully before whipping out your typing finger!!!!!!.........Bill S

My post was in response to when Michael said, "I still have all of the original brake lines on my 63 and 66 and I don't even flush the system every four years like I'm supposed to. I still think the silicone fluid thing is a hoax." Sorry if it was too confusing for you to follow. Jim

--------I guess I am just real confused, Jim. Why dont you tell us a bit about yourself so I can understand who is confusing me so much? You know, put it laymans terms for me. But hey, dont bother if it cuts into that restoration time you were going on about.......Bill S

Re: here is my 2 cents worth

Michael, some of the major fleets that were using silicone have switched back to conventional DOT 3-4 fluid because of the puddling. They had localized internal line corrosion. The H2O collected in the low places as you stated and rusted the lines out.

Dick, How long does/did it take to rust the lines out and where did you get your data?

To the best of my knowledge the US military (in tanks for sure, but maybe more) and Harley Davidson are still using DOT 5.

Re: here is my 2 cents worth

I picked this data up several years ago when we were a member of the Technoligy and Maintenace Council of the American Trucking Association. I do not remember the source of the research nor the length of time to rust the lines. I would think that the rust would take the same amount of time with either mineral or silicone fluid. Another issue was under hard usage and overheated brakes, that the pockets of water could/would vaporize and turn into steam.

The reason I asked, is because I wondered how your fleet data was pertinant to the subject of this thread and sure enough it isn't!

                      Enough said.

Art, suggest that you read Michael Hanson's post of 7/6. My post was just a reinforcement of what he said
