    Dash bulbs

Can anyone tell me the trick to replacing the indicator bulbs located behind the speedometer? I found in the repair manual that the guages and speedometer can be removed but I hope this is not neccessary. This is in a 59 corvette.

    David,

The bulbs can be replaced without removing the speedometer, tach or gauges.
It's just a bear of a job to get your fingers up in the correct position to snap them in. It's just a time consuming and aggravating process. Sometimes one or two will snap right in and you fight with the others. Be patient! I've done this a few times and always got them in without removing any instruments.

Many of the can be reached from underneath, the metal socket just pop out of the metal housing of the gauge with side pressure at the end where the wire enters. upper levels will depend on hand size and dexterity, neither of which I have been found to possess in abundence. When that occurs removal is next, but not too bad of a job in reality.

If you push the driver's seat all the way back and remove the bottom seat cushion, you gain slightly easier access to under the dash.

          Hi Dave

Dave is right about being a bear to replace them. I just put in a new wire harness in my 62 vette. Getting your hands in there is the hard part. If your replacing all the bulbs start with the top.Be patient cause you will most likely pop the other bulbs out if your hand hits them. The wires are not long. It happened to me. And there is no way you can take the gauges out to put the bulbs in without causing yourself big time grief. There just is no room.Just work slow. You'll get it.

            Dave...

Use a flare-nut (tubing) wrench, insert the bulb/socket, reach up and push the bulb into place. Also take the seats out, get a bed roll as a cushion, and do not drop the wrench on your glasses or thump your head.
