The steering damper from my SWC built Feb.63 was painted black, there is no sign of gray paint in any crackor chrevis. I beleve it to br origional by it's date code that is befor the cars build date. The JG calls for gray. My question is, since they were made in the same plant as the shocks that were painted black, why would they have a seperate paint line for Dampers when there is only one for every 4 shocks and only on corvetts. I could see the dampers being gray in 64 when the shocks were changed over to gray but not in 63. I am getting ready to install the damper and trying to deside to paint or not to paint. I have not seen a 63 with a gray damper to date. However the 63 corvetts that I have seen, have operating black replacments and not origional. I could use some light on this subject. Serching the Archives did not help.

Re: 63 Steering Damper Color
Carl,
The black coating would be correct for your 63. In fact, I believe it was correct for 63-65, with a possible change to grey occuring for 66.
There was a previous discussion on this topic a few months ago and most agreed the correct color would have been black.

Re: 63 Steering Damper Color
Than you for your response. I am doing a frame off for the first time, it often seems that there are more questions than answers. It is nice to here how others view this subject, So I will lieve my Damper black. With the help of all of you out there I think I will get the car done by next spring. May not be perfict but better than most. One of these days I will figure out How to post pictures.

Re: 63 Steering Damper Color
I posed this question to the board a few weeks ago. The 65 JG also states that they are painted gray as well. However, I have examined quite a few originals lately for my 65. All of the ones I examined that appeared to be untouched for model years 63 - 65 were painted black. It's difficult to see in the pics but the edges of the scratches definitely show gray paint under the black. I saw this on several other examples as well. There is also black overspray on the original bolts, and the black paint is heavier on the bottom side when mounted. So I feel confident that at least model years 64 and 65 were painted gray from the manufacturer. They were then painted black after mounted on the car. Now as to whether the black paint was applied at the factory or by previous owners, I can't say for certain. However, I'm going with black on mine.
