    c1- 1958 trunk spears

hi, my trunk spears when new 25 years ago came with threaded posts and nuts/ washers to attach to trunk. I now have the correct flat speed nuts from CC and they wont fit the posts. Many of the posts need to be replaced as they have snapped off. Does anyone know what the posts should look like (smooth or threaded)how long the posts are and if there is a repair kit, and who sells it? Thanks again Susan

    Sue,
Mine have threads & from inside, flush against the trunk surface I measured 3/4 of an inch. If you send me your email I will try to send pictures. I don't know how to post pictures on the NCRS board.

      Susan,

On my '58, I also had broken posts. Although not NCRS judging correct, I used aluminum welding rods cut to length. Drilled out the broken posts, threaded the holes and threaded the aluminum rods and screwed them in. The green CC flat speed nuts wouldn't work for me either. I used the cup type. They will thread onto the aluminum studs. I would thread them before mounting the trunk irons, back them off and then mount the irons. Makes it easier. If you use this method and plan on NCRS judging, expect point deduction. My '58 does not have NCRS
      judging in it's future.

i had a problem threading the correct speed nuts on but did not have the tool made for it(see cc catalog) . once i got it they went on easily. how many people still have the fiberglass discs around the holeswhere the spears attach on the underside of the trunk? did all 58 orginally have those?

          Sue & Others,

First the original 58 Trunk Spears did not have threaded studs. At least the ones that came on production Corvettes. The first pilot line cars had Brass Spears with threaded studs but that's another story. The production cars from GM had the studs made of pot metal just like the Spears. They were cast in molds with studs, then polished and chromed. The pot metal studs are large 1/4" that require those green special nuts and special wrench found in some commercial catalogs.

Reproductions have the threaded studs and you will have to use the 10/24 nuts that fit those studs.

          Hope this helps,

          JR

Hi Debra, its great to see some interest in the 58 from another girl. I have had mine since I was 16 and did a body off then. I think I have had every part of my car apart and back again over the vast years. I dont have email but use my husbands it is David.Gilbey@aexp.com I would love to see you car. I guess we all have repro trunk spears- I thought mine were origional. What can you do. Keep in touch regards susan

                Susan,

My trunk irons are original. I did buy a set of repo's a while back and then had the originals re-done. They came out perfect. The difference between the two I had is that the repo's are solid and heavy. The originals have hollowed areas on the bottom side except where the studs are. The originals also have part numbers since they are a left and right configuration. These numbers are in one of the hollowed out areas. I don't think repo's can be made to look like orginals and the only place different is on the underside. Just get a prop to hold up the trunk due to the added weight.

                David

                    Here's a close up...

of an original pin. Both pictures are posted on my Weblog on the C1 registry. If you need to supersize them go there and its under "'58 9128 restoration and factory details" (thanks Rob). Hope this helps.

Mine didn't have disc around the holes but..

does have the reinforcement for the rear most pin. I have a very late '58 (i.e. next to the last day of production) and it doesn't show any signs of ever having any discs. Were they a separate piece or attached to the trunk lid? Any pics?

Re: Mine didn't have disc around the holes but..

Mine are original & have PAL stamped on the disc part that is connected to a nut that lies flat against the inside of the trunk,( Susan, that is where I measured from) & the threads are odd & don't look like regular threads. The threads are light & hard to see against the chrome coating on the stud.It makes sense that they used these because of the weight. I use my cane to hold up the trunk. LOL I have a head injury & that is the best way I can explain it to you, sorry. I would post a picture but it is to hard for me to do.I will try to get a friend to take a picture, I don't get many visitors.
                        Good luck,
                        Deb
