63 versus 64-67 Spare tire carriers.

How can I tell the difference between a 63 lid and a 64-67 lid? How can I tell the difference in the 63 tub versus the 64-67 tub? Thanks for the help.

    Rick,

Boy people are staying away from this question like it has the black plague. OK the texture of the glass is the first thing. Both the lid and the tub are black with very prounced white fiberglass strands close to the surface. The lid strap where the wrench goes in is welded into a box and the later 64-7 is stamped and welded. As far as the tub, the lip of the tub extends below the lid about 1 inch. Of course the bolts for the 63 come in three different designs and probably could not be explained in type.

    Hope this helps some,

    JR

Rick, as I recall the 63 lid and tub changed around April of 63 to the 64-67 style. If you have a late car, say after VIN 14000, the lid and tub, 64-67, with the one inch lid is fine.

I had the impression that 63 lids had a smaller lip around the perimeter than the later lids. I think it is only about 3/8 inch wide.
