I put this one in my 'watch' folder last week, just to see what the new Al Knoch repro '61-'62 red trunk mat would go for, compared to the $192 (inc. shipping) I spent last month for the exact same thing from the vendor. Check the link. Wow!
Reading it through quickly, you get the impression it is an original mat, or somehow different than a reproduction. He mentions it is a reproduction once and buried in the middle so he is covered but it isn't clear to most.
I've lost any feelings for those paying too much for Corvette parts on eBay. I hate seeing sellers rip off people but some of them deserve it. I've been on many auctions marked wrong as a 19xx that I knew what they were 19yy and bid on them, to have someone else outbid, thinking they were 19xx instead like the seller said. Seeing the other bidder would be bidding on many 19xx parts, and no 19yy, I've dropped a note that the item was not what the seller described and was not the 19xx but a 19yy instead.
I've had a couple thank me, but I have had many tell me where to go instead, so my feeling is let the buyer beware. It may be a part I need, but I won't bid against stupidity.
The description is quite clear to me that this is not an original mat. Plus, the seller is offering a 3 day return 'privilege'. So in all, it seems to be a fair description, with the exception of the statement that, "It has been out of production for many years." What? the original?, or the repro?...at least until recently. Anyway, EBAY is an auction process and people sometimes let their egos get in the way when bidding. As always, Caveat Emptor.
I noticed that this seller regularly auctions "NCRS correct" repro wiper vacuum tank reservoirs. It is amazing some of the prices he has achieved for that item. Does anyone have recommendations on who produces the best repro versions? Thanks. - Kevin
I just bought a tank and valve assembly from Tom Maxwell, his phone number is 301-948-9481. He re-did one of our wiper transmissions and the washer pump, beautiful work on both.
I emailed this seller in reference to a jewel blue 1961 matt. He stated that he could provide one but would have the wrong part number. I will bet it was a black matt from Al Knoch with jewel blue dye. I called Al Knoch Co. and they stated that jewel blue matt would not be available for at least another year. I have a red 62 matt in the 1961 and asked if they have a jewel blue dye. They recommended not dying trunk mats.
If you look at the winning bidders profile, they have a total of one purchase. If you go to the bidding log and look at how the bidding took place there were essentially two bidders fighting it out. One with 1 and the other with a 10. Clearly novices in both corvettes and ebay auctions.

Yeah, I noted the 'winner's' rating. God knows I've bid on a few corvette things where I later did some reading and was relieved when I was outbid. Heck, I've got a lovely original C1 air cleaner that I picked up on Ebay for $99 that is so dinged up the restorer at Vette Products of Michigan wouldn't even touch it. It all goes to show there's no substitute for educating oneself before playing this game.....
Many of us know the seller, and he has simply placed the new Al Knoch repro mat on eBay, clearly states that it's a reproduction, not original or NOS, and just "let it rip" for whatever people were willing to pay for it. Lots of newbies and folks out there who don't keep up with the parts world and don't know that mat is readily available from Al Knoch and his dealers for far less money.
It cuts both ways though. Sometimes the seller doesn't know what they have, or they just don't present it very clearly. While 99% of the misrepresentations are in the sellers favor, that's not always the case. I've picked up several items well below the market value. Most notabley a pantent pending no "R" distributor cap for $10, and a very nice original non-DOT Firestone Super Sports goldline spare tire with 65 dated steel wheel for $180. I almost feel guilty about those.... Nah!!!!
