    Re: Repop 64-67 Shifter

I put one in my 65 that I got from Joe Ray. No problems shifts great. The biggest pain was getting the Hurst shifter out. I was told by someone there all made by the same company and there the original manufacturer. I still like the Hurst better but its a big hit on points if your having your car judged.

      Re: Repop 64-67 Shifter

Five or six years ago, I put a new shifter for my 66 beside a used, original. To my untrained eye there wasn't any difference. The former worked quite well when I put it in my car.

        Removing Hurst....

        Thanks Mike for your help.

What did you go through to get the shifter out? Looks like there is NO WAY to get attaching bolts out, given the close fit in the trans tunnel. I originally installed the linkage with the body OFF.

Makes me wonder if the points are worth it....I know its like 30 points...huge.

Had to drop exhaust front pipe, took the trans mount out to lower it a few inches. Take distributor cap off in case it hits firewall. Then take the linkage off. The bolt you can only get about a quarter turn at a time. To get the shifter out. Stock shifter goes in easier. Set up is a bit of a pain, not a lot of room. You loose the opps points for no reverse lockout. Also points for interior. Mike

            Thanks Mike..,

Can't say i am looking forward to this one...especially with underbody exhaust and on jack stands to boot!

Per latest judging manual, the after market (Hurst) is a FULL deduct. I understand this means all originality points (15) and all conditions points (10), for a total 25 point deduct. Do you agree with this interpretation.

and reverse lock out opps. deduct of 25. This means a Hurst car gets a 50 point whack!....ouch

Sacrilge in some religions though not unheard of, is to drill a socket sized hole through the shifter tunnel to remove bolts. Holes drilled in the floor of the storage area to drop rear carrier was another method used in the days of yore. Another reason to have sidepipes.

Not sure on the interior points. Maybe someone that knows will explain it. Opps check will be 25 deduct though. Also when I said to drop the front exhaust should have said left side only. Mike

                    Mike,
Can't say I am looking forward to this one. I NEED To confirm the interior deduct. This is one "bottom-end" job I am not looking forward to. Little reward replacing better part with no so good part.

Also, I am assuming you pulled the drive shaft, in order to lower the tranny tail. True?

Thanks Mike!...sharing folks, like you, make this hobby.

                      Had It wrong

Jack in another post made it a lot clearer. I didn't know the other items were included along with the shifter. Mike

                        50...37pts... little better...

Still may not be worth the time and money...

Did you drop the drive shaft?

How long did it take you roughly..

                        Thanks
