    1967 Speedo Cable Removal-How?

This 1967 speedo cable is cyclically squeaky based on speed. Drives me crazy when the stereo is off. I want to remove it to lube the inner cable with graphite grease or replace the whole darn thing. Can anyone tell me how to get that cable off the speedo head? Does it just screw off like a motorcycle cable? I haven't tried yet. Just need tips before getting my hands up under the cluster and breaking something like the oil pressure line. I'm known to be a bit of a ... mechanically-challenged person. But I will give it a try.

BTW, is that cable still available from GM if I need a new one? Hello Joe Lucia!

      Paul,

It just screws off, but it is very difficult working behind the cluster in a contorted position with no visibility of what you are doing. I'm not sure GM makes a replacement cable, but your can get a replacement cable at most auto parts stores. Get the one with the metal crimp-on head and save your original to measure the exact length.

Please pardon the other poster who told you to screw off. I thought this was a Technical Discusion Board where members helped each other.

It only needs lubing. You don't need a replacement.

It is very tight behind the cluster but I will give it a go.

I will try lubing it first. But the tip re a local automotive store is a good one if that does not work. That implies that the speedo cable is GM generic and varies only by length. I appreciate that advice.
