    C2 396 Idle/starting problems

After having my 1965 396 rebuilt (original specs except hydraulic lifters), I am having trouble getting it to start and idle. The only way I can get it to start is by leaving my foot on the accelerator and then its only hit or miss after cranking it for what I know is way too long. When it starts it runs pretty well except for when I get anywhere close to idle- it dies abrubtly. Sometime when I am attempting to crank, it backfires out the carb with a flame (very impressive). Its not the original carb - its a rebuilt 3310 that ran fine earlier. I thought it was the carb so I tried another and the same excact same thing happened- only would start after pumping and cranking wide open. I am confident that the wires are not crossed and the TI is working correctly because it runs well at higher speeds. I was wondering if maybe I misadjusted the valves when putting it back together. Would an exhaust valve that is not fully closed cause this too happen. Any help or ideas appreciated.

Not sure what you exact problem is, however with backfires you mentioned the power valve in your Holley has to be ruptured. A Holley with a ruptured power valve will run at higher speeds when more fuel is required. A correctly tuned, timed, and properly operating carb on your 396 should provide a immediate start and run.

What procedure did you use to set the valves. An exhaust valve not fully seated would backfire thru the carb.

        Wayne,
The way I adjusted the valves was to turn the engine by hand until I observed the valves, both exhaust and intake, fully close and then to tighten down until snug plus an extra 1/4-1/2 turn. I guess I really need to get a compression gauge and check the pressure on each cylinder. I really thought it was the carb until the new one did the exact same thing which is why I think it must be something else. It also does not seem like it can be the TI since it runs well, but again I do not know that much about low speed TI problems. It seems to have good spark. Thanks for any help you can provide.... its extremely frustrating. Matt
