i agree with the last post ,Craig. you can get a threaded stud ( without the fitting for the guide plate) and trying to keep as clean as possible thread the hole. (7/16 i believe.) i am sure some shavings go into the water jacket. i used a lot of greese and kept cleaning the tap. the problem is to get it straight when doing it in the car. (they didnot pull out even with the wrong cam) i kept pulling studs and the engine builder had me pull the engine and it was redone, they put screw in studs with guide plates and the right 097 cam (58 car) . the advantage of having a big company do the rebuild-now questions asked

      Scott,

As an option, an old driveline issue had a good article on a kit made for replacing press-in studs with screw in ones. If I remember correctly, the kit including the correct drill bit, tap and mounting kit to do one stud at a time using the adjacent ones to hold the tool in place. You can replace just the one, or all. The article describes in detail how it can be done with the heads on, and using grease to catch any metal filings.

        ADDENDUM

Sorry, the article was in the restorer, not the driveline...

I referred to that article (written by Chuck Gongloff in the early 90's) several months ago, and the company in St. Louis that made the kit has apparently gone out of business since then - at least I couldn't find it with numerous internet searches.
