Hi all, I have the grab bar out and have had the sleeve to recover the bar for a very long time. I have no idea how to get it off and not wreck the underpad or what ever it is to make it soft. Has anyone recovered the bar? Any tips, what to do and not do? My bar at the ends (near the chrome and by the bolts underneath) are very hard and turn up (kind of like a flare). How do you prevent this from occuring again? Any and all comments appreciated. Regards susan

Re: C1 - 1958 grab bar recover
Hi Sue
I had to replace mine and found it to much to do. I took a razor blade and cut the stitching. When I tried to get the vinyl cover off the foam, I had no luck. They were stuck together from either age and heat or if they used glue.It started falling apart. I decided to buy one that was already covered, from corvette central. I used all my original screws.Looks great and works great.Other than buying one, I have no answer for you.I don't know if you can cover right over the old one. I personly would not. Buying one was my best choice.
Good luck...John- Top

C1 - 1958 grab bar recover
I did this many years ago on my 60. I think what finally worked was to turn the cover inside-out, tuck one end in and slide the cover into place. This is not even clear to me. Imagine removing your sock by pulling the top of the sock down over the rest of the sock so that when you are done, the sock is inside-out. Now imagine reversing this process. That's how the cover goes on. Talcum powder is a great lubricant for this process. I remember being amazed at how easy this was. Good Luck.- Top

Re: C1 - 1958 grab bar recover
Hi Bob, I have the sleeve and am willing to try the sock method but have a few questions. Did you take the old cover off or put the new cover over top? Did you have the old cover and foam hard and flaring out at the metal plates on the under side. ( I hope you know where I mean) If you took the old cover off how did you pad it? Thanks in advance for your help, regards susan- Top
