    63 Steering Column Paint

I have my 63 column torn apart (black interior) to restore and was wondering what paint to use. Looks like SEM Trim black or Krylon 1613 would do the trick. Sound about right?

    Thanks

    Joe,

When I restored the steering column from my 63 I used Krylon 1613 and painted the complete column and the color looks fine. When you install the column into the car read the 63 shop manual because the procedure to center and adjust everything is spelled out and this will be important when you align the front end. Sorry I got off topic. Tim

Joe, There may be two answers to your question. It could be as you suggested or it could be whatever color is used to paint the interior metal and kick panel trim. On a 63 the upper portion of the column was painted interior color (red, saddle, etc).

When I restore mine, I found black paint under saddle paint on the mast jacket, but no trace of black paint under the Control Assembly. This leads me to believe additional paint was added at final assembly.

Saying that, whatever paint/dye you used for the interior trim is probably appropriate for the upper 13 inches of the column.

Harry has it right. Before the column was assembled, the bare mast jacket was dipped in 104, semi gloss (or semi flat... whatever) black. After the column was assembled, the upper portion was sprayed the correct interior color. It was not masked so the interior color faded away to a mist around the 13" area, as Harry indicated. The t-signal housing and steering wheel hub were not primed.

          Re: 63 Steering Column Paint-Thanks

Thanks for the info. I do have the FSM and will look it over before putting the column back in.
