    C2 - Trailing Arm Installation

    All,

At a point in the restoration of my '66 BB convertible of installing my rebuilt trailing arms. I have no information on the number/orientation of the shims that were originally install. I plan on using the original type (closed hole) shims. How do I get started?

I have searched the archive, with no success.

What would be the correct step-by-step procedure for initial installation/orientation of the shims? Even distribution of shims on each side of the trailing arm between the frame rails? Or does it matter? What direction do the tails of the shims (the ends not threaded throught the frame bolt) face? Are the tails of the shims connected in some fashion. I understand that adjustments will be made down the road when I have the vehicle aligned.

If some one could post some pictures of a correct installation it would be greatly appreciated.

As always a million thanks for your help.

    Triple R,

With a 9/16" socket as a spacer between the bottom of the trailing arm and the bottom edge of the frame opening where it sits in, place the amount of shims(usually one of the thickest) on the inside required to put the brake disc parallel with the frame, then fill in the outer side with shims. Try to use a thicker one last, which makes it easier to push it into place. This is a "ball park" method used by a corvette shop that does this on a regular basis. If you give me your email address, I'll send you a picture of the shims on my '66 that have never been removed since installed at the factory. If you are using original type shims, with holes on both ends, either side can be inserted onto the pivot bolt. The other ends are not held together in any way.

      Rory

I suggest you use slotted shims first and after the allignment is complete you replace the slotted with the same size origional hole shims. This shound save time during allignment when shims need to be moved and/or added for the allignment.
