    207 TI Coil Embossing

Should the embossed "207 12V" on the can of a 207 coil be located on the upper 1/3 of the can or the lower 1/3 of the can? All 207 coils I have seen have the embossed numbers on the lower 1/3. However, one of the suppliers, from whom I ordered a replacment 207 coil, says their numbers are embossed on the upper 1/3 of the can, because, they believe the 207 coil came both ways. The supplier went on to say that passenger cars used this coil also, and the bracket on passenger cars held the coil on the top, whereas the Corvette bracket holds the coil on the bottom. Which location of the embossed numbers (upper or lower 1/3 of can)is correct for NCRS judging?

FWIW (and I'm no judge) -- bottom ...

and usually (more or less) centered under the red/silver sticker. I base this on three "207"s I have; one new-in-(pull-string)box; another NOS (no box) and a third ratty-but-nice (and obviously original; thanks Mike E.). There IS a slight difference in font on these; the ratty one has "12-V" (with the dash) under the "207". The two new ones do not have the dash, so the 3 characters line up exactly under the 3 characters of the "207".

Interesting theory on the bracket location. I have an original (another "rattty) 210 TI coil with embossing on the top. It has a very short dash between the "12" and the "V"; almost like a dot or period. Of course, in this case, the sticker is 180 degrees opposed to the embossing.

But be careful on the sticker lettering format on these replacement coils. The font is smaller than on the old stock. (I can email a pic of the latter)

      Fire up...

your copy of the NCRS Complete Restorer on CD-ROM and you'll find two articles by NCRS member Kenneth Kayser on the subject of Delco Remy ignition coils. The first appeared in the Winter '95 issue of Restorer magazine where Ken walks you through the pertinent changes made by Delco Remy as it pertains to ignition coil packaging.

There you'll find the one source who told you some were embossed high, others embossed low was actually correct. Among the myraid packaging changes Ken details (height of bakelite tower, height of +/- mounting posts, pads with or without holes for early 'tanged' washers, tower with or without 'shoulders' for washer swivel protection, Etc.) you'll see Ken document Delco moved the physical position of the coil's cased ID emboss from 'high' to 'low' effective March 8, 1967...

If you're shopping for a 'correct' original or a 'decent' reproduction coil, the information Ken gives in the two Restorer articles is, in my opinion, more detail than most offering ignition coils to us for sale know about what's what...

        Re: Fire up...

Jack & Wayne, thanks for the input. I did "fire up" the Corvette Restorer CD and found the information - would still appreciate the view of any NCRS Master Mechanical Judge as to whether they judge the position of the embossed numbers.
