    C2 -Interior paint

I had ordered paint from a local shop ,to paint the interior parts of my 66 laguna blue car {dash, center console, kick panels etc}and I found it was a poor color match.

I then found out that Al Knoch offered interior paint and since he had supplied the seat covers , door panels, dash pads ect. ect. I fiqured he would have the matching Paint as well. He agreed that he had the paint and he was satisfied that it was the correct color, so I ordered it .One Quart of "Dupont Lacquer".

I now have it in hand and to my disappointment it is in its Glossy /uncut form!
Another phone call and they tell me it is up to me to flatten it to my taste,as in their opinion ,there are varying degrees of flatness in the interior parts.

So can you folks Help me out with regards to what type of Flattener to use and how much to use ?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jim

Find a local dupont retailer and get flattener and lacquer reducer to match the air/substrate temp. Mix according to instructions.
The flattener I have is dupont 4528s, it may be superceded by a newer #.
The retailer may mix it for you and put it in a spray can. Best to do a couple of test panels with different mixtures. A suggested starting point is on the flattener label. Hardest has been accomplished....getting the right shade of color.....no small feat on these cars.

      Jim,
I am unsure about C2 cars, but on all C1 cars, the paint was not flattened at all. It was sprayed as it was and not rubbed out. Looking at old paint that is flat and dull, it is easy to assume that it was flattened, but in reality it just dulled down over time. The judging standard is "as produced" not "as aged".
About the only time you should need to flatten paint is on the jambs and interior when you use urethane. Lacquer will not look that shiney unless rubbed out. The interior parts on a C1 were just laid on the floor of the car and painted as the car moved through the paint area, no special paint or prep.

        John,
According to the 66 JG ; the Dash panel,Speaker grill ect. are painted "low gloss". The Kick Panels are carpeted with a metal edge which is painted "full gloss [unbuffed} ".The Discriptions for the rear Quarter Pannels and Center Console just say " interior color".
All of which seems to say at least some Differences, ie. flatting agent or different Paints were used inside ! My guess would be a flattener ,But I admit to knowing next to nothing !

Based on the discriptions I just stated what are your thoughts now?

        Thanks for the reply ,
        Jim

          Joe,

Thanks for the response. It's not wanted to hear though. What I wanted to hear was A specific ratio that would solve all My guess work ! I should have known it wouldn't be that easy.

          Thanks again,

            Jim,
What I know about C2 cars could fit on the head of a pin with room left over! I just knwo that on C1 cars nothing was flattened. I will defer to the true C2 experts!LOL

Most Mid -year's restored to day, the inside colors are all matched perfect to each other seats and etc. But every original mid-year I mean original I've seen dint all match up but for the Black interiors.Red was the most obvious Miss-match.

I agree with Roy. It is more about original finish, an extremely thin single layer on relevant surfaces, at best. Simply stated, if the color is in remiss you are on mars but shades vary. Gloss levels are described in the guides. Formulae to attain objectives are best left to paint professionals. Observation of original items indicates structural surfaces single coated smoothly with color, soft surfaces impregnated.

I think that if you would remove the interiors of C-2 and C-3 cars and lay them out on a flat surface, you would be amazed at the difference in shades, hues, colors. Some do not even look close, but when you reinstall them back in the confines of the cockpit of the car you are unable to distinguish the differences

Go see Scott at Young Paint Sales on

19th Avenue. Have him get the 1966 DuPont book out; maybe if you bring
your mexican paint, they might even flatten it and put it into spray cans for you.
There are a couple of "degrees" of flatness and the 39 year old book will tell you what goes where - last chance to change the color..........

                      Loren,

Thanks ,I'll go see Scott next week.

As to the color change ,I thought about it but it turns out there were'nt any "Mary Kay" Cars in 66! So that killed any hope for my second choice in color !
