My car had fairly new pads on when I bought it. I've put on about 600 miles, and was hoping the squeaking would go away, but it hasn't. If anti-squeak lubricant is the cure, and there are no metal shims, I assume it would go between the metal backing of the pad and the pistons?...

Rob
There was a reprint of a service bulletin about this in the Restorer about 6 months or more ago. It talked about cutting the corners off the pads. I have not done anything either, but it is annoying. Mine only squeal with light braking and more when cold. If you try another method, let me know how it works.

Re: '66 BRAKE SQUEAKING
Hi Rob:
I seem to recall reading about this topic in the archives when I was doing research prior to a complete brake overhaul. I think one possible suspect for squeaking was the use of metallic pads, and another suspect was glaze on the rotors.
Last year I rebuilt my brakes with new rotors and the "soft" GM pads that Joe Lucia had recommended in an archived post (part number 18028641, I believe). I also tapered the leading edges of the pads as described in the service bulletin that was reprinted in the Restorer. So far (only a few hundred miles) there is no squeaking at all.
By the way, in hindsight, I'm not a big fan of replacing rotors that are not damaged. My old rotors had less runout than the new ones. I think that glaze on the surface of old rotors can probably be carefully removed with some sandpaper.- Top
