    C1 gasoline odor

Does anyone have a solution for gasoline leakage at the cap. I can tell how much fuel is in my tank without looking at the guage by how fast I take a right hand turn! I've tried a new cap and it still happens. thanks Charile Lambusta

There should be a drain hose from the gas fill area down and out the bottom is it there?

      Charlie,
A couple of things, are you sure it is coming from the cap and not the vent?
The vent hose dumps in the same place as the cap does. Also, there is a nipple that comes out of the filler neck area and it attaches to a hose that runs out of the tank compartment and dumps under the car. Many of these hoses are long gone, which allows the gas to puddle in the bottom of the tank compartment and really stink up the inside of the car. If you do not see this hose sticking out the bottom of the car, you need to replace it.

What year car is it? What kind of cap are you using? Vented or non vented?

I finished a frame off resto of my 60. Mostly all NOS parts. I installed a repo gas tank, the one with the baffle and a vented cap and then a non vented cap. All the hoses are installed and clear and every time I fill the tank beyond half way the car stinks of gas. As I recall I had the same condition in my 62 that I owned back in the 60's that got a new replacement fuel tank purchased directly from Gm. I can't get rid of the stink either!

              Charlie,
Check the hose and clamps that connect the filler neck to the tank. If either clamp is loose or the hose is cracked from age gas will leak there. If that fails bring that old 62 over to my house in Toms River and I'll take it off your hands. I do have a nice original 62 filler neck if yours is damaged. Regards Rich

The filler hose from the neck to the tank was loose on my '62. I replace the hose and tightened it as much as possible - no more odor. Also, is it possible you actually have a hole in the side of the tank?

I put a non-vented cap on my 57 (all the other hoses and connections were checked out - the original tank is still in #3143) and it got rid of 75-90% of the fumes.

                    Bill,
once I traced back fumes (and gas) leaking past the cork gasket between the tank and sending unit. The gasket had split due to age. Regards,

thanks all and to Rich Thomas, I guess you are right that if I sell you the car the gasoline smell will go away but I'm looking for a solution that will let me keep the old thing. I still drive the heck out of it even with the 4.11's. Hope to see you soon at a local show, Charlie Lambusta

I do the same. The old fuelie isn't happy just sitting. I'll be going out to the Jackson meet on the last Friday in August. Try to make it. Rich

                          Jim,

I changed the sending unit gasket, filler neck hose, vent hose and checked all the steel line fittings first. Finally I tried the non-vented cap (leftover from when I had a 58) and that seemed to nearly cure it. I think my vented cap worked too good!

I have been working on this same problem on my 62 for some time. Installed a new tank, pipes, hoses, gasket, and cap. Fill her up, make a right turn, and the filler body cavity gets wet with gas and stinks like hell. I pressurised the tank last weekend and found no leaks except for the vent hose and vented cap. I thought about switching to a non-vented cap, but I know Chevy called for a vented one. Course I wonder why the tank needs both a vent hose on the top of the tank, and a vented cap.

I assume no one has had any troubles with non-vented caps?..Ed

I changed to a non-vented cap on my 1960 and that got rid of all the odor problems. Did it a year ago and haven't noticed any other problems. Jim
