Strange Looking Corvette
I think some guy named Jim Hall in Texas was customizing them.

I was really looking for Joe's '57
but I haven't had any luck. I thought it might show up in some vintage races before going on the street. I thought some of you might enjoy these old Corvette pictures though.

Ironically the 1967 Lynndale Blue exterior color
was named for a race track that closed in 1967.

Here is one from New Smyrna Feb.57. This is the pro-am race that took place the second weekend of the '57 Daytona Speed week. Ed Cole was concerned about the factory backed thunderbirds beating the private entry Corvettes ..so he sent over the Nassau/Daytona car with Paul Goldsmith who just set the speed record on the beach.

Many years ago, while visiting in Casa Grande, Az - about 1961 -with the family of 'Gar' Carlson, I remember hearing that he was an engine builder for Paul Goldsmith. Does anyone know whether this might have been the case? I remember driving his early fifties Ford pick-up with a Cadillac V-8 of his and thinking it was the greatest!- Top

Re: I was really looking for Joe's '57
David.I am not familiar with Gar Carlson..maybe Clem will know.
When Paul Goldsmith drove my 57 at the 57 Daytona Speed week on the beach and at New Smyrna he was partners with Smokey.
He had a great career as a motorcyle racer and as racecar driver winning the national motorcycle championship 5 times then going on to win the Daytona 500 and placing 3rd at Indy etc..
He along with Richard Petty and Junior Johnson received the first Hemi engines...that tore up the tracks.
He also drove for Ray Nickels of Nickels engineering. Ray sponsored the Pontiacs.
Both Paul and Ray now in their 80's live in Griffith,Ind.- Top
