    Re: ZZ4 in a '60

Jim, I found the article in the NCRS restoration & maintenance encyclopedia manual that I purchased 2 years ago, for 1958-1962 corvettes. Its an article called Overheating Problems by Dwight Farmer. If you would like a copy e-mail me your address and I'll send it to you. if you have this manual its in the Mech #1 Volume. Listed under cooling system-2.

      I suspect the sending unit.

I'm sorry I'm so slow in responding.

Back in the seventies many members first noticed the problem with replacement sending units. No one, not even GM, sold a unit that would work properly with a pre-'63 temperature gauge. I wrote an article for the Restorer about the problem in '78 or '79. Since then others have written much better articles that describe the way the senders should work.

I still don't know of anyone selling a NEW sender which will work properly in these cars. You must either find an original (late fifties passenger car units will work), buy a recalibrated sender from a rebuilder, or install an in-line resister (I've used 15 to 20 ohms in the past). An even easier solution would be installing a new Stewart-Warner mechanical temperature gauge.

I replaced the sender in my 69 upon rebuild and experienced the identical situation, dug the old one out, problem solved. It doesn't seem that the manufacturers care to sort this out as the problem still exists after three decades.
