    '70 Big Block Valve Covers

What is the part number for original flash chrome valve covers for a '70 454 LS5 with power brakes? Also, what manual can I purchase that has this information in it? My assembly manual does not have engine and drive train numbers. Thanks.

Thank you very much Warren. I am a rookie at this doing my first restoration.

        Warren and Dave-----

These part numbers are later SERVICE part numbers for the 70 big block valve covers and they are configured somewhat differently than the original valve covers. The original valve covers were GM #3947883, left side, and GM #3981016, right side. The GM #325169 came into SERVICE use in November, 1972 and the GM #325174 came into SERVICE use in Jnauary, 1973.

The GM #325174 uses a "push in" style rubber oil filler plug. The GM #325169 has the raised area for the oil filler plug, but there is no filler hole. In this manner, the same stamping could be used for either side cover. As far as I know these were SERVICE-only valve covers and were never used in PRODUCTION, at all. I can say, for certain, though, that they were NEVER used on a Corvette in PRODUCTION.

I've seen NOS examples of these covers sell for big $$$ on eBay. Very foolish purchases, though. Foreign-manufactured, "generic" big block valve covers are closer to the original configuration than these GM parts

          Joe,

you would put foreign manufactured parts on a car?

Yes, in some cases, I would. Valve covers are a perfect example. Some of the far east reproduction big block valve covers are a work of art. The quality of the stamping is far superior to any ever originally installed or available in SERVICE from GM. Plus, the chrome is far better. One of the primary reasons that these covers are not correct is that they are better than GM originals and, therefore, are unlike the originals. There are other minor configuration differences, too, primarily related to spark plug wire and other brackets.

Of course, I don't like the idea of foreign parts but I've got to give credit where credit is due. It's impossible to change things that we don't like by pretending it's not so or wishing that it were not so.

By the way, if one doesn't like the idea of foreign-manufactured parts, then you sure don't want to buy a C5 or C6. There are LOTS of foreign-manufactured parts on those. The transmission on 6 speed cars is manufactured in Mexico. The engine is manufactured in Canada. Many wheels are manufactured in Japan. Many electronic components are manufactured in the far east or Mexico. The list goes on-and-on.

yeah an the blocks are cast in Mexico. then shiped to Canada, then BGK. But I want my OLD Corvette with all USA parts, that I can get. even if I have to pay ten times more for the part.

has far as the new Corvettes, I could care lesss where they are made are what they make them out of an from.

Why do you have such an issue with non-US parts. This is really a big question mark for me, especially if the parts are equal or better ?
