    Hagerty Insurance

    Hello,

I'm considering insuring my 65 through Hagerty. Does anyone have an opinion, good or bad, in doing business with them? Specifically, has anyone had to file a claim with them?

    Thanks, Chris

I'm in the midst of a claim with them right now, and they have been very helpful.

      HIGHLY Recommended!!

Never a claim. However, NEVER a hassle either. These folks are all cars nuts like us. I actually like dealing with them.

I have a policy with them on my 1975. Never had a claim but liked the way I was treated and they have a better mileage allowance compared to others. Make sure you check that out if you plan on driving the car to shows. Some of the other insurance company policys have mileage allowances that wouldn't cover me driving the car to the National Meet.

Excellent service on a claim, and 2 tows. No question, no hassel. As noted above, they are pretty agreable on mileage. If you tell them you are going to a National for example, plus your usual 2500 miles per year, I was told it would not be a problem. You are also covered if you drive your car out into the country and stop for lunch. One company I looked at said they would not cover the car unless I was in it, or in the garage!!! No road trips, no lunches, no nothing!

              Re: Hagerty Ins.

I just changed from Grundy to Hagerty. I did this because of recent posts announcing problems with the former and praise for the latter.

                Re: Hagerty Insurance

I went with Hagerty 3 years ago after research on this and other bulletin boards. All reports were very favorable. No claims so far, so no experience there. My insurance premium is under $300/year for an agreed value of $40K.

Hagerty is the agent. The company will require the usual constraints - under a few thousand miles/year; not used for regular transportation; only driven to shows, parades, repair, etc.

                  Grundy

Interesting about Grundy. Their website is poor, their quote was double of Hagerty, and the person on the other end of the phone couldn't have cared less.

Hagerty has been totally positive so far and I could'nt find one thing bad thing about them in the archives. So I'm going with them.

                    Re: Grundy

Interesting comments. A year and a half ago when I was looking for insurance on a '79, I found the opposite. Grundy offered more information on their web site and the quotes were about 2/3 to 3/4 those of Hagerty. Hagerty also stated 2500 mile limits and Grundy stated no limits as long as it was not used as everyday transporation, stating they were car guys, too, and like to drive their cars to events which meant more than 2500 miles per year. Grundy did state if your mileage started to get high, you may have to justify the mileage as club or event related and not trips to the mall.

The mileage limits don't bother most, but a trip to someplace like Bloomington or Carlisle would be my only trip for the year at that rate, if I could make it home.

Another mileage issue I found that most never mention is one a friend found. If he decides today is beautiful and he wants to drive the 60 miles to his parents to check on them, and then come home, that is not car club or event related mileage and is outside the collector car use, so coverage could be sketchy. In other words, they would pay, as they would have to, but expect to have all policies cancelled immediately after. I don't remember which company he had who informed him of that.

I didn't go with either. I went with American Collectors Insurance as Grundy wouldn't insure the '79 by itself and ACI was about half of Grundy and about a third of Hagerty. ACI also has a 2500 mile limit and requests the odometer reading.

I wasn't impress with Grundy's seemingly abrupt reply that they wouldn't insure the '79 unless part of a collection with cars older than 1974, which I stated it was when I requested the quote ('63 and '68), and they provided no follow up. Nothing on their site said that the '79 (25 years old as required at the time) could not be insure except as part of a collection. Their paperwork also never said the rest of the collection had to be insured with them.

                      Re: Grundy

I had American Collectors 25 years ago. Used them for about 20 years, no claims.
I changed to Grundy 3 years ago, due to American Collectors renewal policy of
more current pictures required after a certain time period. I can understand
this issue however their rates were higher than Grundy's.
Well along came MY 1ST INSURANCE CLAIM.
My car was in a repair shop and the interior caught on fire. 72 Original Owner.
Fire was in 2003. Grundy settled with me in a very positive manner.
Their adjuster was very flexable in my costs and payment was processed in a
                      timely manner.
It is a whole nother story about the shop, but I eventually sued the shop
to recoup deminished value/interior claims not requested from Grundy.
I felt a law suit towards the shop was more satifying than a supplemental
                      claim with Grundy.
Grundy continues to cover my cars, and I am happy with their insurance
                      coverage and rates.
If you want to learn about FIRE DAMAGE claims let me know.
I NOW know who to hire as a witness in such a claim, etc...Big John

                        Re: Hagerty Insurance

Check the past threads. I posted a similar question a few weeks back and got a lot of positive responses about Hagerty. I currently have Grundy and they are worthless. I am still fighting with them over my claim of hail damage in Bowling Green in May. I will be switching to Hagerty in the next week or so when I have the time to "get'er done".

I think you will be very happy with Hagerty. I also had hail damage at Bowling Green and my claim has been settled several weeks and there was no hassle. Jimmy
