I have a pair of trunk spears for a 58 that I am restoring. Is there any way to differentiate originals from reproductions? Also, any recommendations for obtaining and installing the mounting units? Thanks.

Re: 1958 Trunk Spears
The originals are hollow, made of pot metal, and have molded in mounting studs. My understanding is the reproductions are made of brass or sheet metal, have screw in studs similar to the grill moldings. Some of them are solid and are too heavy for the trunk springs to hold the trunk up with them on. I posted a couple of pics of an original one awhile back. I'm not sure what you mean by "installing the mounting units". Here's a picture of the back side of mine showing one of the mounting studs. Hope this helps.

Re: 1958 Trunk Spears
Original trunk spears are a chrome plated pot metal casting. The mounting studs are part af the casting too. They are secured to the trunk lid with fasteners similar to the clock console. I do not remember what they are called, but most of the big catalog companies carry the tool to affix them.
Reproductions I've seen are chrome plated cast brass or bronze and the fasteners are machine screws. The spears are drilled and tapped to receive the screws.
Almost all of the repro houses add their logo in some inconspicuous area, usually very small. I do not know if originals have a OEM logo along with the GM P/N, or just the P/N.- Top
