That's pretty cool, I've got a 75' with FE7 and I would like to see what your tank sticker looks like.
    Thanks. Ken.

I had a late 74 that the whole sheet was their not turned brown much but I could not read one word. The ink used at that time didn't last. May need a crime lab for this one and it may not help. Lyle

OK, don't laugh, but I swear I saw a post one time where somebody had used a video camera with the "night vision" feature turned on to read their illegible tank sticker. I don't have any idea if it works or not, but you might try it. If you have any luck, let us know!

The camera is a good idea. Also try scanning it and playing with the contrast and color this sometimes brings it out.

Cleveland, my 72 tank sticker was about 70% legible but I wanted to ensure that the remaining items on it could be verified. I scanned the document and used Photoshop to play with the contrast and background color. Once that was done, the remaining information came out incredibly clear. If you have access to Adobe Photoshop, I would play around with a scanned copy of your page. I had no previous experience with Photoshop but found it easy to use.

i found photographing the sticker worked better than scanning, but maybe my camara is better than my scanner.

Mac, the reason for the scan is so that it can be saved as a jpeg and then altered with photoshop. I suppose you could do the same with a camera - just a few extra steps.

                  IR photography makes sense!

These were originally printed via carbon impregnated ribbons and, though severely faded, what remains of the original carbon particles SHOULD generate a different color temperature vs. the surrounding paper making the original printed font 'stand out' when viewed by infra red vs. white light recording media.

The prior post on this subject used an upscale video camera with IR mode, BUT, any/all of the analog 35mm cameras we have sitting on the shelf gathering dust have built-in IR capabilities. You simply need to acquire a roll of IR B&W film, load the camera, focus on the build sheet, then move the lens' focus point to the 'red dot' on the camera body to compensate for the focal length offset of the lower wavelength IR light.

SB duck soup to do a test run and 'bracket' your pictures using alternative F-Stop/shutter speed combinations + 'tweaks' to the focus off-set to fill a roll of IR film....
