    1957 Rear Axle Rebound Straps

Does anyone know where I can find rebound straps cut to size-

How much space should there be between the axle and the strap??

The TM indicates there should be 3" between the top of the axle and the frame. This is where PARAGON gets their dimensions from.........they deem the straps for a '57 should be 27.25 inches long.

The gap on my '57, between the frame and top of the axle, is 9" long. Between the frame (where the strap attaches) and the bottom of the axle is 12 inches. For the life of me, I don't know where the TM gets the 3 " dimension.

I figure my straps need to be 31" long........this will give me about an inch of space between the axle and the strap.

If I add the 6" inch difference between the TM and my '57.........the straps should be 6" longer than the ones PARAGON sent me....another words, 33.25 inches long.

    Thank you in advance,
    Mike

Mike, The strap dimensions you seek bear directly on the arc of he rear springs and dimensions of the frame relative to the floorplane. These frame to floor diemensions can ve found o pg. 201 of Noland's VolumeI. Once the frame to floor dimensions are replecatd, then you'll have some idea if the spring arch is correct on or off somewhat. Once the frame to floor dimnsions and arch of rear spring is known to be ccorrect, then you can decide on the lengh of rebound straps needed. Regards

      Hi Jim,

I talked to someone at PARAGON today who informed me that the VEH has to on the frame or the frame needs to be compressed towards the axle in order to put these straps on. Another words, the arch has to be taken out of the leaf springs.
It makes sense to me so I'll give it a try. I've never replaced these straps before.........learn something new everyday.

      Thanks again,
      Mike

The 3" dimension is correct - that's design ride height with a full tank of fuel, and at that height you should have about 2-1/2" of air between the bottom of the axle tube and the straps.

Thanks John- I now realize the fact that the weight has to be on the frame.
I was fortunate to come across some articles written on the subject........one by Joe Calgano some time back. Very informative and now I feel like I can tackle the task at hand.

          Thanks again,
          Mike
