GETTING TANK STICKERS FROM GM OR???

    Hi guys,

I was watching the barrett-jackson auction this evening and they were discussing corvettes. They mentioned that you can get a copy of the original "build sheet" of your car if you contact GM directly....anyone know about this or another source (even for a reproduction)????

    thanks, marc/ california

There are several stories out there, but it all boils down to the fact that they didn't keep the record's back then or tehy were lost. I have heard the building where they were stored burned and several other's but the fact is if you do contact G.M. you will get no help.I tried a couple years ago when I got mine ande was told sorry we don't have any thing on a specific part number. Lyndon:

The chevrolet division during it's heyday, apparently outsold all other GM divisons combined, causing quite a storage problem for these records. Other divisons like Pontiac, Buick & Oldsmobile used different methods and did retain said records. Although these divisions vary in how far back records exist.

Marc...if the car was delivered to Canada, that would be the only way that you could get original delivery info......

The only other tank sticker "type" of data is the dealer invoices which are available for '77 and later Chevrolets and certain other GM brands. You pay $50 to a third party to research the files based on VIN. They were able provide me with a copy of the original dealer invoice which shows the options the car was built with, where the car was delivered, who financed the dealer floor plan, etc. The following is contact info for this service and was taken from an email sent to me by GM Archives:

The General Motors Vehicle Invoice service is now being coordinated and managed by Allied Vaughn, a tier one supplier of GM. Please submit the attached request form for copies of GM invoices.

As of March 1, 2005, the cost for this service is $50.00 per invoice. If paying by credit card, your account will be charged within two business days of fulfillment.

Fulfillment is expected to take two to three weeks. If paying by check or money order, please mail your check or money order and a copy of this form
                      to:
                      Allied Vaughn
                      11923 Brookfield
                      Livonia, MI 48150
                      Attention: GM Vehicle Invoice

Check or money order payments may cause a delay in fulfillment as it must clear before your order is shipped.

Invoices are available for vehicles* in the following model years:
                      Chevrolet since 1977
                      Pontiac since 1987
                      Buick since 1982
                      Cadillac since 1980
                      Oldsmobile since 1977
                      GMC since 1976
                      *Fleet and exported vehicles excluded

We do not provide window stickers.

                        Mike,

I don't know what these guys are up to, but Cadillac production records have been available for years for Cadillacs and LaSalles built from 1910 (and maybe earlier) from Cadillac Historic Services. I can't recall how new the CHS goes too, maybe these guys are handeling the newer cars. I've got the production record (hand written) for my 1937. Maybe there is competition in this field now.

                          Terry,
I think the problem is that once it was discovered that these invoices were available GM was inundated with requests. GM actually did it for free for a while then once they saw what it was going to cost in overhead to maintain the service they farmed it out to Allied Vaughan.

Re: GETTING TANK STICKERS FROM GM OR???

Ah, the pains of too much success. Seems reasonable. Think how much success could be had if they had the older Corvette build records. We would all beat a path to their door.

I got my paperwork many sleeps ago (wish I could recall how long, but 15-20 years seems reasonable). As I recall there was a $50 charge (for what turned out to be a single handwritten sheet that isn't even 8.5 by 11 -- ignoring all the other hobby material that came with it). The organization that was doing it was for the benefit of a Cadillac Museum. Kind of an interesting situation from my perspective in that Cadillac wound up giving money to that museum at the same time Chevrolet maintained they could not give any money to the Corvette Museum.

I believe the older paperwork is still available for Cadillacs from that same source. I have seen recent ads in the Cadillac Club publication, but haven't paid a lot of attention to them. Guess I'll look closer at the next one that comes along.

Sorry for the off-topic posts folks, but thanks Mike for the information. It should help some people.
