Trying to come up with a way to remove the outer race/sleeves from the arm. Both inner sleeves and integral rubber have been removed. Not enough inner clearence to enable removal of shaft from outer race/sleeves and arm. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Re: 64 Lower control arm and shaft

The procedure for front control arm bushing removal is described and pictured in the Chevrolet Service Manual. While special tools are shown, the removal tools can be rather easily improvised or fabricated. A press is required, although it might be possible to substitute an "impactive tool" (large hammer). Even though you have "partially disassembled" the bushing, I think that this procedure will still work for you.
Another alternate procedure that will work is to use an air chisel. This must be done with a SHARP chisel attachment and VERY carefully to avoid damage to the a-arm. To do it this way, insert the air chisel tip between the bushing collar and the air arm. As the collar seperates from the arm, rotate the air chisel against the inner side of the bushing collar so as drive the bushing out. Once you get the "knack" for it, you can remove a whole car set of bushings in 15 or 20 minutes. Once the bushings are out, the control arm shafts are easily removed. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
