When the engine compartment was painted were the a-arm dust shields in place so that they were painted also. Any info would be apreciated.

The pliable fender dust shilds often show significant evidence of semi-gloss black overspray from the "blackout" operation but they are generally not wholly painted. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Midyear engine compartment
John, Yes they are. The hood is in place when color is put on the body. After that, the engine compartment is blacked out. Note that the latches, cable between the latches, and even the wiring clips on the firewall are in place before blackout, BUT THE HOOD SUPPORT, HOOD RELEASE CABLE GOING TO THE INTERIOR, and COWL WEATHERSTRIP ARE NOT.
Good Luck,

Add-on
I agree with Joe here, nice description.... Most savvy judges look for evidence of overspray on these 'splash shields' on the order of are the upper staples black vs. natural? If there's evidence of black, the restoration is generally deemed correct because overspray is known to have extended this far. But, like any other masking item, individual cars varied considerably due to painter, skill, Etc.- Top

Re: Midyear engine compartment
Hey guys you give the General too much credit. You don`t think they masked those flaps do you. They didnt mask anything at black out except the painted area of the hood ledge and that was a preformed device that covered the fender areas. No masking tape here boys.- Top
