    1960 Hood Airdam

I am trying to obtain information as to exactly where on the hood underside surface the the rubber airdam is cemented on a 1960 Corvette hood. AIM and Vol. 1 restoration manual both show the airdam and the direction it faces but are vague on exactly which of the stepped surfaces on the leading eight inches of underhood surface is used. Every real car I have examined no longer has one in place.

I went through this same process when I did my 59 a couple years ago. The ideal would be to place it before installing the hood but as you've found out the book is unclear on which step to cement the gasket to. With the hood is place the location gets easy because you want it to sit on the top edge of the radiator with the hood closed. Then the choice is whether to remove the hood to apply the dam or do it in place while leaning over your fresh paint. But while you are doing this rubber also do the rear hood rubber. In the book it looks easy because the thought is just glue it to the rear step in the hood and it would be perfect...wrong. By personal experience if you don't get the lip to rest completely into the hood grove in the body you will have difficulty closing the hood. and this gasket is more difficult to place on the car than the front dam. I suggest placing a 2x12 across the fenders and and sit with your feet in the engine compartment. Good luck. I wish the discussion board had been in place when I built the 59.
