Re: engine to car dates
Nancy,
Interesting that you have a 340 HP with an engine assy date of 14 April. I have another very original 63 340 HP car on file with the exact same engine assy date, and if I remember correctly, the cast date was also the same as your 12 April. The part that was strange was the fact that 14 April was a Sunday. When I first looked at this car way back in the 70's, I was quite concerned and thought something was wrong but later heard that this was somehow caused by the Monday 1st shift coming to work on Sunday evening. I don't have the VIN handy but I remembered the engine assy date after all these years.

Re: engine to car dates
It's really not uncommon to see engine assy dates within a few days of the car assy date. Most likely, your car assy date would be late in the 3rd week of April. Also of interest is the fact that Friday, the 12th, was Good Friday, and Sunday, the 14th, was Easter.
That VIN sounds vaguely familiar. That wouldn't just by chance be a tan conv, would it?- Top

Re: engine to car dates
Mike, was there a 3rd shift on April 19th of 63. If yes, did 3rd shift end after midnight sometime on April 20th. I ask as my 63 was build on April 20th which is a Saturday. I just assumed that were working that Saturday to meet the demand.
Thanks

John Hinckley Would Know......
I'm not sure Harry. I've never been to the Flint engine plant but John Hinckley would probably know much more about the schedule as he was there several years later.- Top

Ok, thanks Nancy. Sounds like a nice car. Triple black is rare for 63 conv., for some reason. Nice combination.- Top

Re: engine to car dates
I think there were only two shifts at the St Louis plant at that time but I believe Saturdays were included, at least for part of the 63 run. Could be wrong but I think I know who would remember for sure. Lemme check into this.- Top

Re: John Hinckley Would Know......
It was not uncommon for St. Louis to work Saturday overtime, as demand frequently outstripped straight-time capacity; St. Louis only worked two shifts. Flint Engine worked three shifts in the machining departments, but only two shifts (usually nine or ten hours each) in the engine assembly departments; Line #1 ran at 170-190 per hour, and Line #2 ran at 110-120 per hour - normal schedule was 5500 engines per day.- Top
