My 73 Coupe has had tach noise since I bought it 1 1/2 years ago. I have greased the cable at the distributor end and have tried to pull the cable out to grease the other end but cannot. The noise is primarily behind the instrument cluster. I therefore decided to pull the driver's side instrument cluster to grease or replace the cable head. I have unbolted the steering column from the dash, unbolted the floor pan bolts and also the flexible coupling but I cannot get the column to drop more than about 4 inches. This is not enough room to get behind the instrument cluster to release the tach and speedometer cable. I need the column to drop at least another 6 inches. I have released the interlock cable that connects to the steering column from the transmission (4 speed). What else do I need to do here? Thanks for any help.

Re: 73 Coupe Tach Noise
Jerry The tach cable can be removed with a helper. One person under the dash pushes the cable relase and the helper under the hood pulls on the cable when instructed to do so. It looks worse than it is and with A/C you need to remove the duct. LyleLyle

Re: 73 Coupe Tach Noise
Thanks for the suggestion Lyle. I have a secondary reason for removing the instrument cluster however. Several of the illumination lights and one of the turn signal lamps are out. I would like to replace all of them which requires access to the back side of the instrument cluster.
Is there anything I can do to further lower the steering column? Thanks.- Top
