    C3 (68) Windshield Spacers

After refurbishing the windshield frame, I am now ready to install a new windshield in my 68 convertible.

The 68 AIM calls for spacers between the windshield and the windshield frame. Spacers #4877156 are shown positioned in the upper right and upper left corners, while spacers #4871330 are shown positioned in the lower right and lower left corners.

Here's my problem: my local Chevy dealer cannot find these spacers in the GM parts system and they are not included in any of my Corvette parts vendors' catalogs.

Before I start contacting local windshild installation firms, is anyone able to describe these spacers for me or, perhaps, direct me to a good supplier?

    Thank you.

    Henry-----

Both the GM #4877156 and GM #4871330 spacers were discontinued without supercession in October, 1987. The GM #4871330 was, essentially, an 11/32" X 7/16" X 1" piece of rubber. This part was used across all GM car and truck lines in the 60s and 70s. I'd be surprised if windshield installers don't have equivalent pieces in their "bag of tricks". Otherwise, this piece could be easily fabricated from rubber stock.

The GM #4877156 was used only on 1968-76 Corvettes and some Buick models. I'm not certain of its configuration. However, even though it has a lot more limited application, I would expect that windshield installers have substitutes for it, too.

i'm having a new windshield put in my 73 coupe next week...concerning these spacers: were they used to position the glass within the frame properly, or used to space the glass out away from the frame? (hope this question makes sense to someone) rick

          Rick -

They were used to space the windshield out correctly from the windshield frame surface and to prevent over-compressing the Thiokol adhesive bead so the moldings fit properly and didn't exhibit gaps to the glass surface.
