    1965 Windshield Wipers

All the wiper stuff was out of my '65 when I got it. I am now trying to figure out how it goes. The linkage rods are attached to an arm on each side (the right and left wiper posts) and the other end of the rods hook to another single arm in the center on the motor. Are the arms on each side positioned up or down? I've looked in the AIM and Shop Manual, but I don't see what I am looking for. Thanks for any help.

    Dave:

Here is the only picture that I have. I hope that it helps you.

        Dave,
In addition to the photos, you will find (in AIM) that there is a rubber washer/bushing between the left and right wiper operating arms. Left arm goes on motor shaft, then rubber bushing, then right arm, then retainer clip.

        Good luck with your project.

        Regards,
        Gene

          Thanks Joe and Gene,

That is exactly what I was looking for. As the old saying goes, a picture is worth a 1000 words, especially in my case. Thanks a bunch.

With the motor parked, the passenger side arm points down at about 5 o'clock, and the driver's side arm points up.

              Thanks John,

I saw the response on the other forum. Looks like it is driver' up and passenger's mostly down. Thanks again for your help.

                Gene,

I have never seen this rubber bushing that is shown in the AIM. I ordered a repro for my 63 from Corvette Central and the inside of the rubber hole is large and I could never figure out what it does so I did not use it. Everything still fit snug when the clip is installed so I figured that this part may be the brass insert pressed into the wiper arm. If anyone has a picture of this part I would appreciate them posting so I can see how it looks. Thanks, Tim

                  Tim,

I had the same trouble at first. The brass inserts in each rod are pushed in from the back side of each rod and the diameter of the insert is larger on the back side (about the size of a quarter). I think the large hole of the rubber spacer just fits over the larger diameter of the brass insert on the back side of the top rod on the motor drive arm. This is what holds it in place. I still have mine exposed so will try and send you a picture. In case I have trouble figuring out how to attach a picture on the discussion board you might send me your e-mail address so I can send you the picture that way. Mine is dgmpam@adelphia.net Thanks.

                    Tim,
Dave has given a good explanation of how the rubber washer/bushing is installed. If my car did not have the original bushing in place, I would have been confused, also.

The large hole fits around the outside diameter of the bronze bushings. It takes a little fiddling with, but once it's in position you'll know you have it right.

                    Good luck.

                    Regards,
                    Gene
