66 Side exhaust covers - HELP!

Have a 66 427-390 coupe, on which a previous owner put side pipes. Not a factory side-exhaust car. Noticed that the brackets were screwed-on to the covers not riveted and the brackets themselves were not "correct". The covers are NOS, so I bought the rivets and brackets and re-installed them on the car.

Here's the problem - They're too long now. They extend into rear wheelwell. What kind of problem do I have on my hands, and how do I fix it? Passenger side is worse because the bracket has that notch that moves the cover farther back.

Your collective expertise would be greatly appreciated!

    Tim,

Did you or the previous owner put in the additional holes along the side(under the door) required to attach the retainers for the moldings that go underneath the covers, as well as the covers themselves. If so, do the holes line up? Can you post a picture of your covers on the car?

With the correct brackets on the covers, the holes did not line-up properly. I had to drill new holes and remount the metal strip the rocker molding attaches to, along with the cover. Now the molding and the cover extend beyond the rocker panel into the wheel opening.

        Tim,

If I'm picturing this correctly is there a chance that you reversed the position of the front mounting bracket ?
