Re: 69 vette wont start, electricle problems *UPDA

kind of got it going today.

we put in a new fuseable link and that took the voltage from 8 to 12.

when we hooked the starter up outside the car, and connected the ignition wire to the starter, the starter fired right up with the key.

now, we put everything back in the car, hooked it all up, and its right back to where it began. -40 draw, starter doesnt sound like its engageing, nothing.

i have no idea why it would work out side the car when its wired the same way as inside.

sounds like the brushes are shot and will not allow the full juice to the starter under load or the armature bushings are shot in the starter housing.

Have you tried turning the engine over manually to make sure it's not seized?

we know its not seized. the car was running just last week before we took the old starter out.

as for those brushings that were mentioned, are those in the starter its self? if so, i know there good because this is a brand new starter.

          Hi Lance,

Have you tried not to connect the green wire to rule out the circuit to the coil is not shorting the supplied starter voltage so it drops to the measured 8 volts?

Hook the starter into the car without attaching the green wire and give it a try...

          greetings,
          Rob.

she runs, and runs very well.

we took teh starter out today and started cutting wires off. after replaceing about 3 wires we hooked everything back up again and she fired right up.

now with this high torque starter, and 875amp cold cranking battery we put in there, she fires right up on the first turn. something that has never happend before.

thanks to every one that offerd suggestions on what could have been the problem.
