The nuts I have on my 65 corvette heater box (no air) assembly on the engine bay side look like large 1/4" speed nuts. Are these correct? Should the studs be plated or painted? If so, should they be cad.,zinc, or black plated? The JG simply says nuts, so I am assuming there are several variations used. My 65 was built the first week in Jan. 65. Also my engine bay heater box has some black paint I need to remove. Has anybody tried stripping this with paint stripper or razor blade without hurting the natural black glass strand look. Thanks for the help.

I too am working on a '65 conv. All I was able to find about the nuts for the engine bay heater box looked to be speednut type nuts. Mine also had some black paint on it. I used laquer thinner and a little extra rubbing and it finally came off. Don't know if yours is the same kind of paint, but that is what worked for me. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Dave. I am going to use the speednuts for now. I'll try the lacquer thinner first before using my corvette paint sripper. Some of the paint comes off easy with a razor blade, but I run the chance of digging into the surface. Dick Gutman- Top

The speednuts are correct, Black Phos, the studs apear to be natural on the ends and on the head side where they are riveted to the inside box. The speednuts would have removed any finish anyway.
I would advise against any stripper, pealing or sanding in favor of a paint remover as the other posters mentioned, these may actaully remove the fiberglas strands and leave the impression of where they were. Not the finish you would want to represent in judging. Always test in an inconspicuous area first.

When I removed the heater box from my original '65, I found two different size "speed nuts".
All are 1/4 X 20, but the three that secure the blower motor assembly have a flange that is approx. the size of a dime. The four that hold the heater box have a flange diameter about the size of a quarter.
I'm sure they are correct because in the AIM (page E73), you will notice that the three that hold the heater blower have a different part number than the other four (plus the one inside the car).
As far as paint removal, I wonder if brake fluid would remove the paint without harming the fiberglass box?

Nuts / stripper for heater box assembly
I recently removed paint from my heater box. It was suggested that I use "Peeler" stripper that comes in aerosol cans and is available at auto parts stores, manufacturer is W.M Barr & Co. in Memphis. The body shop that suggested the product said to have a bucket of warm soapy water and a rag ready to wash the remover off after it has had a short repeat short time to work. Note that it works immediately upon application. As I used it, the product did not damage the fiber glass heater box cover at all and the box looks like new.
The speed nuts on my '64 were of two different sizes (dime and quarter) as noted in an earlier post and were also black phosphate (or similar) plated.
