    Presentation for Judging

I'll be having my car judged for the first time next month.... to learn more about it & find out what is & isn't correct. I'm just barely starting my restoration & I doubt it'll achieve any flight levels yet. My question is about presentation & documentation. I've reviewed the judging manuals & ops manual & the appropriate '70 manual etc. They say that you need to bring documentation, but never really state what should be brought along...

I figure the build sheet is necessarry... Should I get the original one out of the safe, or is a high quality color copy sufficient? What about copies of prior titles (MD didn't let me keep the original owner's title). Do I need to bring my current title or is insurance / registration enough proof of ownership? What about the other things I've collected like the dealer advertising brochure? I've got photographs of things the judges can't usually see, like the bottom of the fuel tank (from when I had the spare tire assy dropped) & insides of the doors... any value in bringing that along?

Also, I was originally thinking of gathering it all together into a 3 ring binder in plastic sleeves, however those plastic pages are NOT the thing to use as they contain acids and break down the paper over time. What do you all do?

Regarding the presentation of the car itself I've been told that you can earn an extra point or so for an NCRS sticker on the car, a fire extinguisher etc. Now maybe I missed it in the manuals (entirely possible they're so packed with info) but does the sticker have to be in a particular location (I have a convertible) and does the extinguisher have to be mounted or just in the car? If mounted where? Also, I presume there should be nothing in the car sans original equipment & owner's manual. Will I loose points if I leave my roadside repair security (aka nice compact basic toolkit & points/condenser & spare belts) in the storage area?

    Thanks, Juliet

    Re: Presentation for Judging

Juliet, The most important paper work you need for judging is proof of insurance and ownership of the car. You can not be judged without them. All the other documentation such as manual and protecto plate are good to have for scoring points but not required. Good luck and enjoy the experience!

      Re: Presentation for Judging

      Hi Juliet,

I cut and pasted your questions below, with my 2 cents worth of answers. The main thing you want to keep in mind is that if the judges happen to come across something 'unusual' on your car, and you believe that the 'unusual' thing is actually factory original to the car, some sort of proof will be required to allow the judges to give you benefit of the doubt. This can be doumentation from the factory, photos of the car when new, evidence that shows that this condition was original to other cars similar in S/N to yours etc. If there is nothing out of the ordinary, then the basic paperwork to allow you to register is all that's required. Having said that, you cannot second guess what the individual judge may find as unusual, so why not bring everything you have, it can't hurt!

I figure the build sheet is necessarry...

      -Not really, see above.

Should I get the original one out of the safe, or is a high quality color copy sufficient?

-I'd settle for a legible black and white and only need to see it if there is something out of the ordinary.

What about copies of prior titles (MD didn't let me keep the original owner's title).

      -Nope.

Do I need to bring my current title or is insurance / registration enough proof of ownership?

      -Ins/reg is sufficient

What about the other things I've collected like the dealer advertising brochure?

      -Not required.

I've got photographs of things the judges can't usually see, like the bottom of the fuel tank (from when I had the spare tire assy dropped) & insides of the doors... any value in bringing that along?

-Not for judging purposes, but bring them anyway, show them to the many people that just want the chance to see another nice piece of Corvette history.

Also, I was originally thinking of gathering it all together into a 3 ring binder in plastic sleeves, however those plastic pages are NOT the thing to use as they contain acids and break down the paper over time. What do you all do?

-The only delicate piece of paper I have is my tank sticker, and that's safely filed away somewhere. I'm not sure I would bring anything irreplaceable or delicate to a meet (other than the car)

Regarding the presentation of the car itself I've been told that you can earn an extra point or so for an NCRS sticker on the car, a fire extinguisher etc.

      - Very true, and also a battery disconnect switch. Don't forget to make a note of your driving credit also.

Now maybe I missed it in the manuals (entirely possible they're so packed with info) but does the sticker have to be in a particular location (I have a convertible)

      - I would avoid putting it in the middle of my field of view ;-)but I have never seen a judge get picky about location.

and does the extinguisher have to be mounted or just in the car? If mounted where?

      - Our chapter does not worry about having it attached versus loose, however there is a safety issue with a metal cylinder rolling around the storage area.

Also, I presume there should be nothing in the car sans original equipment & owner's manual.

-True, it will just be in the way when it comes time to look at the interior of the car.

Will I loose points if I leave my roadside repair security (aka nice compact basic toolkit & points/condenser & spare belts) in the storage area?

      - Since you will have to remove your air cleaner, shielding top cover and drop your spare, why not remove your kit and all other stuff you end up bringing along (chairs, cooler) and have it close to you during the judging.

Don't forget that this is a hobby, and the idea is that everybody is there to have fun.

      Mike

        Acid Free Preservation

As far as protecting items in a notebook, its my understanding that there are acid free paper and platic protectors available. My wife is into scrapbooking and she has all kinds of acid free stuff.

          Re: Presentation for Judging

You've received good advice from the others, Juliet. Go and enjoy the meet. Since this is your first judging, it will most likely be a learning experience. And surely you will earn a flight certificate of some level. Good luck.

            Re: Presentation for Judging

Advice of others is quite sound. The meet Judging Chairman should have 'forced' you to supply proof of ownership (state registration is OK) and proof of insurance with your meet registration. They will ask to re-verify these items at the meet (who knows that they haven't been revoked/cancelled in the interum between registration and presentation of car for judging).

Also, the manuals you have (NCRS Judging Reference Manual) tell you about 'standard configuration' for Flight Judging. This means trunk open, spare tire accessible on straight axles and rear tire storage compartment dropped on mid-year/Shark cars. Having an appropriate wrench an socket to drop the spare tire compartment on your Shark is handy as it saves taking out the jack & lug wrench (presuming you HAVE 'em) to prep this portion of the car for show.

You'll need to elect hard top/soft top format for convertible and have T-Tops installed on coupes. Make sure you've got the items necessary to comply (E.g. don't drive away from home without your T-tops or take a convertible without either top installed.

Glove box items ARE reviewed so bring what you've got along; owner's manual, warranty book, protecto plate, envelope, radio instructions, trim ring instructions, seat adjustment hardware and storage bag, Etc.

Bloomington folks get real picky on other items like window sticker being in place with correct original fastening mechanism (rubber cement) and NO plastic protectors. But, at NCRS we generally lay back on this degree of detail (you don't see a line item in the Judging Score Sheets....).

Last, be prepared for the weather (sun block, Etc.) and have standard clean up items to prep your car (wash, wax, dust, Etc.). While the NCRS concours process is NOT a beauty contest, there ARE a small number of points associated with cleanliness (to factory 'as delivered' norms). HAVE FUN, learn, and enjoy the meet, gal!!!!
