    Question for Joe Ray...Rebuilding a 1965 327/300

I reviewed the NCRS Archive disc and found a very informative article by Joe Ray written in the fall of 1998. I Could not find his name in the member e-mail list (lots of Joe's with no last name) and so I am asking my question to him via this site.

Assuming that the cam in my engine is well worn (110,000+miles) what cam do you recommend for replacement? I am not planning on running it at Le Mans or Sebring but if there is a replacement that will enhance the performance a little, why not go for it.

Thanks Joe, (or anyone else who has an opinion)

I believe that you can locate Joe Ray at WWW.JoeRayparts.com or from time to time at Carlisle site G110.

      Dwight-----

My recommendation for you would be to go with the GM #3896929 camshaft which replaced the camshaft originally used in your engine, GM #3733431 (cast 3732798). The 3896929 will provide a modest increase in performance over your original cam. It's GM-discontinued but a Crane-manufactured reproduction is available in a kit with lifters under GM #12364051 or, seperately, from Crane distributors like Summit Racing.

Another upgrade if you want to "spend some bucks" is to go with a retrofit hydraulic roller. In that case, I'd recommend a Speed-Pro (Federal Mogul) CS-1061R (or, KS-1061R which includes the complete kit you need for installation). This camshaft will give you a stock idle, but better power and torque. In my opinion, it's the ideal retrofit for 300 hp 327 or 350 cid engines.
