Re: any other A.O. Smith Date Spreads-Now I'm Curi

My A.O. Smith body 65 has a trim tag date of 5/5 and an estimated build date of 5/13.

that's much better, I was starting to feel like an outcast around these "body built one day, off the line the next day" types . . . .

Can you give us more tag data ?

A or S-body, and body number. Wouldn't hurt to provide full Style, Trim and Paint numbers (exactly as they appear), for our opinions.

My 65 is number 16517. No need for the calculations of the birthday book. GM records indicate that it is the first car off the line in May. A.O. Smith body, built I22. (April 22) Hope that helps.

            Re: Weird 65?

Scott, If you are reading the Trim Tag body build date correctly. It would not be wierd, it's just that ONE of the tags, EITHER the Serial Number tag OR the Trim Tag, is NOT ORIGINAL to the car. If the Serial Number tag was the original (you state #110894) to the car, the trim tag body number (St Louis or AOS) for a convertible should be in the lower 3000 range and the body build date code would most likely be a "G" 24 or after. If the Trim Tag has a L08 body build date and was original to the car, you would have to add about 11,000 cars to 10894, as the Serial Number of the car should be around the high 21000 or low 22,000 Serial Number range. For a convertible the St Louis or AOS body number should then be in the low 7000 range. This is probably more than you wanted to know. IMO, that's the way it looks, others may have a different view. FWIW. Dave

437 B&W trim, MM Milano Maroon,194675S110894 vin/body. I can't find evidence of tampering, but I'm no expert. Any opinions, etc would be welcome!

                20+ years ago, had #15624 convert, A-body ....

... A-5814, also I22 date. Curious to know if my car (7 cars after yours on final assy.) has an A-body # later than yours, or, if the St.Louis basement acted as a blender for Ionia bodies.

Now I'm confused---mine is A-5287. checked that and the I22 three times.
How can 5814 and 5287 both be I22? This old thing that I have had been sitting since the mid 70's when I found it 5 years ago--base motor, three speed, --only options were radio and whitewalls. (I got the protecto plate and the original window sticker with it.)

Sorry Mike -- my misread PLUS dyslexia

Happens to us over-60's now and then. My ex-car is 16524 (7 after yours)(my keyboard dislexia). Rechecked the old pic of the trim and VIN tags and the body is I22 date, but the body # is A-5314 (my misread on 5814), or 27 Dow-Smith convertible A bodies after yours. And this was the point I had hoped to check; ie. that from Ionia, a spacing of "x" bodies of one type (convert) does not necessarily translate into St. Louis VIN spacing of "x" + 1/3 "x" (roughly A-body COUPES produced in same time spacing) + double the previous total to account for St.Louis bodies (roughly 50-50 body production split A to S). Blame it on the basement inventory system.

BTW, the other numbers off 16524 are: Trim Tag: 19_467, STD, Q-Q. Trans: P0415 (3857580 tag), S116524. Diff: AM 4_21_65. Block: F0421HF, D205 cast
