I find only 1955 Chevrolet six cylinder. However, the date would indicate that it was used after that time or this was a SERVICE generator. It is a 25 amp generator. I think most 8 cylinder apps of the period used 30 amp.

This is the generator on my unrestored 57 Nassau/Daytona car ( original engineering workorder engine, pre-production 4360 fuel unit etc.)

The generator has what I would describe as an oversized pulley. The pulley has a natural aluminum looking finish but attracts a magnet.

Maybe engineering used it from a full size car or truck application.

I have read that the early racecars had trouble keeping the fan belts on and in some cases even a double pulley was used.

they used the oversized pulley to slow down the generator speed at high engine RPMs as they could come apart from excess RPMs. it is a 235 CI 6 cylinder generator. the larger diameter of the pulley the less chance of the belt "climbing" off.

I expect that one of the reasons that they may have used the 6 cylinder generator was because it was a lower amperage unit than the units generally used for 8 cylinder applications. A race car of that period didn't have a lot electrical power requirements for things like lights, radios, etc. So, they may have wanted to use the 25 amp generator to slightly reduce drag and, at the same time, adequately power the car's electrical requirements.

Re: Joe Lucia ..can you help identify

Thanks for the insight. ..I wonder if anyone else with a racecar from the 56/57 program still has their original generator..Corvette or Chevy.

I also wonder what generator was used on the SS racer as it was built about the same time as my car. This generator is not a tach drive so maybe the 56/57 carburated cars used another application.
