Re: 69 black out
Up until now I was under the impression that the body black out was performed before the body drop. I was a bit suprised to see that so much has black out on it like shocks, parking brake cables, upper ball joint and it looks as though the muffler really got covered. The black out proceedure must have then been one of the last jobs before it left the factory because even the trailing arm toe shims are blacked out so all adjustments must have been done prior. However, if you guys say it looks right then I'll go with your response. The reason that I inquired is because I'm in the middle of a body off on my 69 and I'm constantly trying to educate myself with what the factory appearance was. I don't live near any NCRS events so I search the net for cars like this and print the pics for reference. I know it's not the best way,but with the help of people like yourselves I think I'll be on the right track. Thanks again guys.- Top

Re: 69 black out
Greg,
You had it right the first time. The blackout operation was performed well before the body ever saw the chassis. All body blackout was done immediately after final color and just before the reflow oven. The chassis was probably still sitting in a pile, not even on the line at this point, so there wouldn't have been any coating on anything from body blackout.
This car has had a lot of spray can work in the wheel well area that had to have been done by a previous owner. The rear control arm shims, bolts/nuts, shocks, park brake cables, upper/lower ball joints etc., would not have been painted at all. The muffler and some of the sides of the spare tire carrier would probably still have a coating but none of the other items you mentioned.

Re: 69 black out
Thanks Mike...I think...now I'm confused though. I'll go with my original understanding that BODY black out was done right after paint. How or when and from what angle then would the muffler and spare tire carrier have received thier coating?

Re: 69 black out
Greg,
Your original understanding of the process was/is correct. Under hood/engine compt and wheelwell backout were done when the body was just a body, no chassis. So, there would have been no overspray of black paint on any chassis components, at all, from body blackout.
The final chassis blackout would have been done when the nearly completed chassis was still on the chassis line, minus body, so no chassis black overspray would have been on any part of the body from this operation. Also, by the 1969 model year, there was very little final chassis blackout, other than mufflers, so you wouldn't expect to see any of the previously mentioned items coated black.
This car has definitely been detailed or "spray canned" several years ago.
