Machining SB heads for rocker studs

I have purchased a GM screw in rocker stud kit and am ready to machine my SB heads to accept the studs. It looks like the stud bosses need to be machined down by about the thickness of the hex on the screw in studs. Is this correct?

I think it's more than that. If I were you, I'd have a machine shop perform this operation.

      Scott,

I agree with Joe, any competent automotive machine shop will know just how to do this and will be set up to do it correctly.

I like doing these types of things myself. I have access to a bridgeport and I know how to use it. I just want to make sure I do it right.

measure the screw in stud length from under the hex to the top of the stud, add the thickness of the guide plate, set the end mill at the top of one of the orignal studs in the head, lower the mill head or raise the table the distace you measured from the screw in stud plus the guide plate thickness and you are there. you want the top of the screw in stud to be at the same dimentional location as the orignal pressed in stud. of course you will need to remove the press in studs after you take the measurement before cutting

            Thanks, Clem

I am not using guide plates. I will be using the self guided rockers.

make sure to enlarge the push rod guide hole for clearance for use of SGR

I am planning on using an end mill to open up the guide holes.
