Re: 1963 1965 SHP oilpan
Word of caution. One of the NOS 63-65 FI oil pans listed on ebay a few days ago was actually the correct pan for a 250-300 HP, not the Sp/Hi perf pan, as claimed in the ad. The part number 3820000 was correct but the pan was not. If I remember correctly, it was listed by Chicago Corvette Supply. If I find it again, I'll post the ebay number.- Top

Found It...
Link to what I believe is NOT a correct 63-65 Sp.H/Perf oil pan. Looks like the sump is about 4" too short. The seller does list the correct part number for the Sp/H/Perf pan, 3820001, but I don't think the part is correct.

Re: 1963 1965 SHP oilpan
Also, the C2 327 mechanical lifter SHP/FI oil pan has a companion flat windage tray that requires five special main cap bolts with stud extensions (which replace the conventional bolts) to mount the windage tray.

Here's The Correct Style
This pan is the correct style with the longer sump. (it's a later issue so some minor variations are visible but the overall shape is correct) The CVS pan isn't even close.

Re: 1963 1965 SHP oilpan
Michael-----
I e-mailed Al a few days ago about this item informing him that the pan pictured in the item description was either a GM #3820000 or a GM #360866. The 3820000 was the standard small block pan used for most 63-74 Corvettes (except 63-65 SHP and 70-72 ZR-1). The 360866 was the 1976 replacement for the 360866. It's identical except that the front oil pan seal radius is 2-3/8" rather than 2-1/4" and requires the 75+ front oil pan seal.
The "tip off" that the pan in the item is the 360866 rather than the 3820000 is that it is supplied with a gasket set. The 3820000 (or, the 3820001) were usually not supplied with a gasket set---just the pan, itself. Since the front seal changed for the 360866 (or, 359942) replacement pan, GM included the correct gasket set with the pan. Of course, this only helped the guy that ORIGINALLY installed the pan on the engine. The next guy replacing the pan gasket and ordering a gasket set for a 1963-74 Corvette, would get a surprise. Unfortunately, he probably wouldn't be aware of the problem until AFTER the gasket was installed and the engine started. Then, he'd have a big leak and he'd wonder why. I'll bet this little "foible" has caused untold grief and oil pan gasket "redos".
I'll never understand why GM thought that this increase in oil pan front seal thickness was so critical that they changed the tooling for most all pre-75 small block oil pans (the unique Corvette pans and otherwise). In my experience, the front oil pan seal of the original thickness is just about as apt to leak as the incresed thickness variety. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1963 1965 SHP oilpan
Did Al ever respond to your email? I see the ebay ad is still the same.
I often wondered about the new and improved "cure all" front pan seal also. I remember when it arrived with all the hype, the last word in ultimate pan seal, but they still leaked. I'm still surprised it took someone 40+ years to finally come up with a basically one piece seal/gasket that works.- Top

Michael----
Yes, AL responded. At first, I think that he had some doubts about my identification. However, in a second e-mail I pointed out to him that the pan lacked the "trap door", too. I think he understands now based on his second e-mail. Perhaps, he has e-mailed all the bidders informing them.
However, I'm surprised that he hasn't closed the auction "due to an error in the listing". That's because, as I told him, the 360866 (which I'm virtually certain is what this pan is) is worth MORE than the 3820001 or 359942. Very few people need the larger pans; MANY people need the standard pan. Usually, the standard pans in NOS shape sell for more than the extended sump on eBay for NOS examples. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Al's been in the Corvette parts business for 30 years that I know of so I'm just a bit surprised that he had this part listed incorrectly to begin with. I'm even more surprised that he would question you.- Top
