I have a fully charged battery, new voltage regulator, and have properly polarized the generator. My problem is that with any throttle response voltage goes up to 30 amps, and my temperature gauge also rises. I have tried two different voltage regulators with the same results. The car has a new wiring harness installed two years ago. The problem just started recently. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'd save the time and headaches of troubleshooting down dark alleys and take the car to a competent local auto electric shop where they can attach their wheel-up diagnostic cart and find the generic source of the problem in minutes by isolating generator, battery, voltage regulator independently. If there's a problem in the 'nest' (defective wiring harness, yes, even new reproductions can be put together wrong) and the v-reg senses low battery voltage when it's not low, you'll get the symptoms you have...- Top

I had a similar problem in my '66 and cooked a brand new battery in the process so don't drive the car too much. Overcharging the battery is not a good thing. My problem turned out to be the ground wire going to the alternator was broken at the lug. Visually it looked fine, I found it using a meter reading resistance. The vibration of the motor caused the wire to pivot at that one spot until it finally broke. I changed the battery, alternator, and voltage regulator before going back to basics and checking the wiring. I would start there first..........P.J.- Top
