    temp guage barely moves

The temp/water guage on my all stock '70 LT1 barely moves. Even when fully warmed, the needle only moves slightly to about 120-130 degrees
ONCE, three summers ago, while cruising @ 75 mph on a very hot & humid day for an hour, the needle moved to the 210-220 range. It hasn't come close ever since.
The car and cooling system is well maintained. The heater works.
    What could be the problem?
I assume a too-cool running car would be bad if actual warmed-up temp was 130 degrees.
Feeling the heat tells me it's running hotter that the guage reads.
Is there a sending unit I can check?
Should I buy one of those (laser?) point and shoot temp gadgets and aim it at the main radiator hose?
    Thanks!

    Adam,

I would suggest you find a shop that has a heat sensing gun rather than buy one and find out what temp your at. If it is within the normal range for whatever thermostat you have installed you then know it is most likely the temp sending unit or gauge and not your cooling system.

If you're asking about your '70 SB, expect to find the temp sender screwed into the side of the LH cylinder head between the #1 and #3 spark plugs. Factory originals were the short run ('68-71) 'pin head' style sender vs. earlier or later 'nail head' style senders.

How do you test it? Compare its temp vs. resistance profile to the AC specification for the sender. Expect to see a resistance reading in the range of 90-115 ohms at 180F and 50-59 ohms at 240F.
