I am getting ready to reinstall the heads on my 66 350 HP. I use to have the steel head gaskets on it, I am thinking oc changing to Fel Pro perma torques. Does NCRS flight judging look for steel gaskets? If so, what is the deduction of non steel?
Don't know the (minor) deduction offhand, but the LAST criteria I'd apply to selecting head gaskets when assembling a fresh engine would be "correctness".
I have used Pera Torques on every other engine I have assembled other than this one. I put steel on it when I rebuilt in in the late 80s and never had a problem. The question is did I get lucky and should I tempt fate a second time? At this point I am leaning toward going with the Fel Pros.
Scott et al,
I just finished the rebuild of my '65 motor. I used original type steel head gaskets and reproduction intake manifold gaskets for authenticity.
The head gaskets are visible in two places. If the little protrusions are required on the intake manifold gaskets, I can't imagine that any judge would allow anything other than steel head gaskets to pass without point deductions.
If we knock ourselves out in every area to restore these cars to OEM specs. and then allow non-original head gaskets, I'm dissapointed in the judging standard.
I asked the question because I know the intake gasket is judged. I assumed the head gasket was also judged because as you say it it still visible on an assembled engine.
